lilac in bloom

Gardening by Lilac

My neighbor gave me that kind of excellent advice that you can only get when you are both standing in the middle of the road with a wet dog in between you. Being new to planting a garden in Maine, I asked her when I should put things in the ground. She said, "When the lilac blooms, plant peas and broccoli and Brussel sprouts and other root vegetables. When the apple trees bloom, plant tomatoes and eggplant and zucchini and cukecumbers. I love that. Of course I loved it even more when a few days later I opened my door to find a bouquet of lilac waiting for me on my porch!
